Yesterday I lost my loyal companion and faithful office mate. If you’ve ever been to The Farmer’s Daughter you would see her laying in her bed next to my desk- never yapping- mostly sleeping, and wagging her tail when customers talked to her. Belle was hit by a car yesterday evening and it has been heartbreaking for our family. We allowed her to run outside- never for very long – but she is a dog and had her own mind. Her luck ran out yesterday.
Growing up on a farm my sister and I have experienced multiple losses of pets and farm animals- we have always had that awareness that life ends at some point or another. It is an awareness that all farm kids get, it’s never easy to lose a pet or any farm animal. We love them all fiercely, take care of them the best that we can but in the end they are animals and we are people.
The Farmer- my dad, David Propst died November 16th two years ago from Covid. Belle was only 4 months old at the time. I would send cute pictures to my dad during his stay at the hospital to hopefully bring a smile to his face. When he passed away our world turned upside down. My sister and my mom both had Covid during this time and I couldn’t be near them. Belle was our saving grace. She brought so much joy and laughter in a time of utter sadness and heartache. She brought comfort for many days to me and my family.
Belle was always by my side because I was her “person”. She rode with me in the car everyday and knew every spot in town that offered dog biscuits and treats. She slept comfortably at the foot of our bed and loved her friends Otis and Mufasa the Cat. She was incredibly smart and knew all sorts of tricks. She would try to do all of them at the exact same time in an effort to obtain more treats. Though her life was less than two and a half years she was loved by many and brought more joy and laughter than we ever expected.
